"Miracle on the Field"
Article in The Pilot about Pinecrest High School's Girls Lacrosse Team and Coach Nikki Schwob
My daughter and a handful of other seniors from Pinecrest High School had played girls’ lacrosse since its inception three years ago.
At a meeting prior to this season, the girls were told that girls’ lacrosse would be canceled: no coach and no money. Team captain Karen Smith was almost in tears. “I’ve played all three years. How can they cancel it now?”
One of the mothers at the meeting, seeing the look on Karen’s face, wondered what she could do. Kathy Virtue, with her husband, Chris, and Karen’s mom, Kelly, and a couple of other parents decided they would coach the team in order to keep it going. Then a miracle happened.
The girls got word that Nikki Schwob was moving to Pinehurst. Nikki had done a girls’ lacrosse camp in Pinehurst a couple of years ago. She was the coach of Davidson College and a former U.S. team player.
Nikki was busy working with AC Sandhills starting a lacrosse league and coaching. The girls begged her to help coach the Pinecrest High School team. Nikki, out of the kindness of her heart and her love of the game, volunteered her time and talent to help coach the high school team, alongside coaches Kathy and Chris Virtue. Along the way, the team gained another coach, Kathy, who volunteered her time.
We went from having no coach to having four wonderful coaches and parent volunteers. Now Nikki has officially been named the head coach of Pinecrest’s girls’ lacrosse team starting next season, and we are so grateful to have her.
As we concluded the season at the Virtues’ home, with dinner and awards, I couldn’t help but feel so thankful for all the wonderful role models my daughter has had.
This truly has been an unforgettable season.
